We're a crime/mafia roleplay set in the present-day Chicago.

After bombing the harbour, the new gang in town, Enigma, all but declared war on the most powerful family in the city, the Bianchi Family. Police struggled to capture the culprits and were well on their way to build a solid case against the Bianchi, but their hard work was set back once the police department was bombed. Now, the war between the two sides is more heated than ever, and the casualties only tend to grow.

A shadow is cast wherever he stands

Stacks of green paper in his red right hand

Folding his arms tightly over his coat to ward off the crisp night wind, Nate stared across the rippling waves beneath him. The one thing he hated most about large cities was how brazenly they would dominate the star-scattered sky with their own pompous glow. As a child, it had given him certain solace to sneak away from the mansion after dark and lie in the damp grass of a nearby meadow. Gazing above, he would search for the majestic Greek constellations and imagine himself to exist somewhere far away from there. Away from his family and the kids that would mock him the next morning of school. The canvass of infinite lights would dwindle the tight knot in his chest, making it easier to breathe again.

Instead of flickering stars, one could only see the orange beams of passing ships. A poor substitute to say the least. Still, Nate found accomplishment in not having to rely on anyone or anything to endure whatever came his way these days, in not being that pathetic little boy anymore. Averting his eyes back to the shore, they were greeted with the familiar sight of Belmont Harbor ruins, bringing a slight crook to the thin line of his lips. Opportunity in devastation. That's precisely what he'd found after the bombing, with some of his biggest competition vaporized. The man couldn't say he'd felt even the slightest shred of remorse at taking over their clients and making a better name for himself.

Perhaps it was somewhat ironic that the chosen business name reflected his childhood pastime, as though a small part of his old self had against all odds survived everything he'd been through. Becoming the namesake of the ferryman transporting souls between the land of mortals and hell had seemed like a fitting choice at first. Unfortunately, the number of morons who couldn't pronounce it correctly, let alone be aware of the mythology, only chipped away at Nate's already uninspiring idiot-tolerance. Turning back to the truck, he was greeted with the sight of his two hired goons gushing over what appeared to be men's entertainment magazine, but the dramatic roll of his eyes remained unnoticed.

Charon was nothing if not thorough, always making certain his operations were faultlessly planned and frequently checking in on their execution. Yet, any potential complications were where he truly excelled, being able to find quick solutions or alternatives, not to mention often already keeping backup options at his disposal for the more likely scenarios. Over the past three years, he'd become known mainly for his reliability. Tonight wasn't any different, with the drug shipment already inspected for quality via his trusted scientist before being re-concealed in hidden bottom compartments of their special paint barrels for the customer's convenience.

Since it was one of his regulars, Nathan didn't feel the need to invest in extra security for the actual trade, but that didn't mean he would let his hired help spend their working hours peruse some perversities. Clearing his throat pointedly, the man unwound his arms and stepped closer. "Isn't there a truck full of cargo you two are supposed to be guarding or do you just not want to get paid tonight?" Nate intoned patiently. It was only barely that none of the insults at the tip of his tongue managed to make it past his lips. One of the burly men begun to mumble something, most likely insulting, under his breath, making his boss sorely tempted to find out how he'd like getting shot in the foot.

Funnily enough

Recruitment, there were always so many possibilities when Ryan had to do those. Usually a person worked for a while for Enigma as freelance and then if they proved themselves as reliable and particularly skilled, they were invited to join in for good. But those two traits didn’t always translate to loyal or even meant that the person would want to join their cause. Usually recruitments were done by the high ranking members, either Ryan himself or Ruby if he couldn’t, and today it was no different.

The candidate had been doing smuggling jobs for Enigma for a few months now, he was discreet and efficient, left no traces for no one, and had taken things under both the Bianchi and the PD’s nose. So far he had dealt mostly with Enigma agents, Ryan made a point of avoiding telling outsiders his name and position or even making himself known, it was all part of Enigma’s… well, enigma. It wouldn’t be a secret organization if he went telling everyone who he was, would it?

He made his way to Belmont Harbor. The place had been mostly abandoned by the Bianchi and everyone else, he even heard some rumors that the place was haunted. It made the perfect place for smuggling, he supposed, if you weren’t afraid to risk Bianchi attention. Sure enough, the information he got seemed to be right on spot, as it should be. He found a three man and a crate of suspicious merchandise. The small guy seemed to be in charge, and Ryan would bet his boots that was the man he was looking for.

He made his presence known without any tricks or surprises, his steps making loud noises against the ground and he put himself in plain view of everyone. “Charon?” That was the name the smuggler used, and Ryan was 100% sure it wasn’t the one his mama gave him. “I’m Enigma. Can we talk or you’re too busy?”

I made a lot of assumptions, tell me if i you disagree with something

Perhaps the interruption in form of an approaching figure came at an opportune moment for everyone concerned. Nathan reeled back his temper as his two henchmen stood up, each with a hand rested over their holstered firearms. Seeing as the man appeared fairly non-threatening himself, no weapons drawn, Nate prompted his escort to stand down with a wave of his hand.

His gray-blue eyes narrowed suspiciously, taking a searching sweep of the stranger. Nate was fairly certain he'd never seen him before, but the way he introduced himself while also knowing his name naturally piqued the smuggler's interest. Of course he'd heard of the infamous criminal enterprise, even if some of that knowledge consisted of unsubstantiated rumors. Whether this man was a charlatan or an actual link to the mafia, Nate's curiosity led him to investigate.

"Is that so?" Charon commented quizzically on the moniker, turning to face Enigma. Plastering on a cordial smile, he nodded. "Very well." Linking his gloved fingers behind his back, Nate inclined his head towards the derelict pier before glancing back to his men to address them indulgently, "Just do you jobs, will you?" With that, he set forth in the indicated direction.

Only his client should've known the details of this exchange, so there either had to be a leak he needed to learn more about or this man really did belong to the same organization as his usual customer. However, since the woman hadn't mentioned a future stand-in, Nate found himself all the more cautious about his identity. And he certainly wouldn't give out any clues to find out how much this Enigma really knew.

Since he preferred to keep all of his dealings confidential from other parties, including his security, Nathan waited until they were at a safe distance before facing up to the towering individual. Many people might have become nervous at the potential prospect of dealing with one of the most notorious and dangerous parties in Chicago but, despite his somewhat frail appearance, Nate wasn't an easy man to intimidate. "How is it may I assist you, Sir?" Ever so polite, at least for now he insisted on keeping the cards close to his chest.

Ahhhh, nothing like the jumpiness of criminals who are caught red handed doing naughty things. There was a tense moment where the guy’s goons stepped forward threateningly and Ryan kept his hands raised, not particularly fearful as he kept his eyes on the boss guy and as he expected, the goons were told to stand down, which made Ryan smile in a friendly way.

The goons were dismissed and went back to securing Ryan’s new cargo, at least that would come out of this, so it wouldn’t be all loss, even if Charon refused. Usually it was Stella who dealt with this man and whoever else who did drug smuggling for them, but he knew how the business went and everyone who worked for Enigma, even if it was eventual, by name at least, even if most of the time he didn’t meet these people.

Criminals in Ryan’s opinion, always had a hard edge to them, they rarely bothered with pleasantries, especially if you dealt with low gangsters in a daily basis. He’d expected the Bianchi associate to be well spoken and well-bred while the ones who worked for him tended to be… well, if they knew how to write their names it was a surprise. But this young man turned out to be very polite, stiffly so even but Ryan wasn’t going to judge him too much for it. “I’m here to talk business. You’ve been working for Enigma for a little while, right? I can say you’ve been doing excellent work for us so far. So what would you say to taking one step further?”

Business.

That word always managed to get Nate's attention. It translated both into money and influence, the latter of which he'd been trying tirelessly to amass over the years. Though of course the cash, or what was left of it after useful investments, was a very nice bonus in addressing his other desires, such as being able to indulge in exquisite, tailored clothing. That in turn improved his image where his God-given looks happened to be somewhat unfavorable for the man of importance he aimed to be. It was either that or brutal violence to send the message, which Nathan generally tried to avoid. Partly because he'd never been any good at winning physical conflicts to begin with.

Unflinching at the other man's looming height, Charon listened sharply to what he had to say, giving a concurring nod to the first question. So, it appeared he truly had been doing jobs for Enigma this entire time. It didn't exactly surprise him, but made him wonder why they would reveal themselves now. If this man was even telling the truth, of course. It would be easy to get overeager about the hinted proposal, bringing an opportunity he'd been hoping for, but unwise to let his guard down.

Cracking an easy smile, Nate folded one arm around him, letting the fingers of its twin drum against his lips in a brief moment of consideration. "I can't say the idea doesn't appeal to me; quite the contrary. But I've never seen you before. A good conman could possess the same amount of information, so you might understand if I need a more substantial proof of your honorable intentions." He hadn't made it thus far by blindly trusting strangers, and successes largely relied on his forethought and diligence. The better something sounded, the less likely it was to be true. For all he knew, the man could be solely after his cargo.

Reactions to Enigma’s leader proposals to a new job varied from disinterest to eager acceptance. But Mr. Charon over here was one of the smart ones who used their brain once in a while, those could be both valuable and unpredictable, but Ryan would like to bet with valuable here. The man had a fair point about Ryan’s identity though, it wasn’t’ like they had met before, and to be honest, Ryan thought the guy was gonna be taller. But even if he had a point, Ryan would be lying if he said he wasn’t caught by surprise. “Oh… You’d be surprised how few ask for proof.” He confessed a bit put off and patted his pockets as if he’d find something there. “uhhh… not sure what to give?”

He was treating this situation very casually, he wasn’t afraid of Charon or his goons, and at the same time, he wasn’t looking for intimidation. It did no good if the people who worked for you were too scared to tell you the truth, so he worked for a light mood from the start, which was why he didn’t mind admitting the truth, he had no proof prepared to show who he was.

But what could he do? It wasn’t like he had a badge with a membership number saying he was the leader. “You could always call Stella and ask about me? She would vouch for me. You trust Stella’s word at least, right?” Not with his life, he betted, but at least it was a familiar person who could tell the truth. “If you want I could also show you a pic of myself with her when we were getting drunk.” He added in jest with a chuckle.

Your greatest passion

The man seemed surprised by Nathan's cautious approach, going as far as to say it was out of the norm from his previous dealings. Fools. Criminals quick to trust others weren't going to make it far, in Nate's skeptical mind. Then again, their mistakes at times tended to work in his advantage. He found the recruiter's struggle to come up with some 'proof' mildly amusing. Not at all how he would've envisioned a high-ranking associate of the second biggest criminal organization in Chicago. That kept him wary. But, on the other hand, neither was it the sort of behavior one would expect from a con artist. Except perhaps for the charm, though the smuggler wouldn't be falling for that.

Sporting a light smile, Nathan shrugged nonchalantly before carrying on in the easygoing spirit the mystery man had established. "Yes well, discretion is in part why I made it the Most Reliable Businessman of the year." Despite his cordiality, Nate didn't offer to lift his stipulation, but it looked like the Enigma fellow came up with an idea of his own.

Stella. Finally a concrete piece of information he could work with. However, knowing the name of his usual contact alone wouldn't make or break the case. Nate was reaching into the pocket of his stylish coat when the man offered to show an image of them getting drunk. "Tempting, though a call should suffice. I will keep it in mind if she's unavailable," he replied lightly, already selecting The Nightingale's contact on his phone before bringing it flush to his ear.

Nathan chose to stay close by, confident in his ability to skirt around any private knowledge. Stella happened to be one of the few people he didn't mind tolerating. Had he any spare time or desire to keep friends, he might have even loosely associate that term with her. Of course, Charon couldn't afford to trust anyone on such level, so keeping their interactions mostly business related (though laced with a certain rapport he rarely experienced with others) had been for the best. It therefore wasn't a spark of relief he felt at the confirmation of her indeed not having been kidnapped or worse.

Trying to keep the conversation brief, Nate then vaguely asked about the man before him taking her place, receiving an equally vague answer about who he was. At least the description matched, so he had the confirmation of dealing with an actual customer, rather than an impostor. Upon hanging up, the smuggler turned his full attention back to Ryan - adding a name to the face was also a change for the better. "Well, friend, looks like the Nightingale has just backed you up." He raised an arm in an offer of a handshake. "I'm Nathan, as you may have known." Stella was one of the few who knew his almost-given name, having been his reliable acquaintance for quite some time.

"How about we wrap up our deal, send the kindly gorillas back to the zoo and find somewhere more convenient to better discuss your proposal?" Despite the innocence of his suggestion, finishing the transaction was of an utmost importance to Nate. To ensure he received the rest of his fee in order to pay his hired help and conduct future investments. Only once that was out of the way would he be able to shake any lingering suspicion in regards to the man. After all, the smuggler was only worth tricking for the cargo, keeping no documents or any substantial amount of cash on himself.

The conversation between Stella and Charon was fairly quick. Ryan waited patiently as the woman vouched for him, keeping the easy smile on his face. At least Charon actually trusted her word enough, the two seemed to be in friendly terms which hopefully meant the guy would be more inclined to join Enigma.

The Nightingale, such a fancy name, it was the first time Ryan heard someone call her that. As expected she vouched for him “Nathan. Nice meeting you finally. Stella has talked about you, yeah. Mostly good things.” He shook the man’s hand firmly. The man’s real name wasn’t actually a secret to him, Stella knew, so he knew, but he thought it was rude to just call him that from the get go since clearly he went to the trouble of creating an alias. “You can call me Ryan.”

At Nathan’s proposal Ryan nodded. “Sounds good to me. Just work your magic, man.” The transaction was for Enigma after all, and regardless if Nathan accepted Ryan’s proposition or not, it would be a win for Enigma. “Is that all of it?” He approached the cargo, inspecting to see if everyone was in order. Everything was there, it didn’t look like Nathan was about to scam them.

'Mostly good things.' This just went to show that making an effort to remain civil around clients paid off. Although, Nate wouldn't have been surprised if Stella had mentioned his temper could at times have issues with individuals of questionable intellect. Sometimes it proved extremely difficult not to backtalk those people, but Ryan's conduct so far posed not strain on his patience. "Looks like you have me at a disadvantage here, Ryan," he gave a broad smile, briefly wondering about how much the firmness of the man's grip coincided with his character. To Nathan, trying to read people came as second nature. It had become quite a reliable way to anticipate when the bigger kids were about to torment him again, as well as means to minimizing those encounters. "But that's where I work best."

The smuggler did not need to be told twice about moving on with the deal. Returning back to the van, Charon instructed his small crew to open it up and protracted one of the paint cans stashed inside. With practiced ease, he unscrewed the bottom plate to reveal a neatly sealed brick of white powder in its hidden compartment, before offering it to Ryan. "Every last ounce. Feel free to inspect all of the containers, just take care with the actual paint. The delightful Nutmeg White is on the house if you ever feel like redecorating." Nate stepped aside to allow his client to inspect the cargo. "Analyzed for purity as per usual. I have the results here if you want to have a look, but go ahead and take a sniff if that's your preference."

It was somewhat unusual for a drug trafficker not to sample his own wares, but Nathan had zero interest in accidentally developing an addiction. Even intelligent minds weren't immune to their enslavement, as he'd witnessed first-hand. Chemical analysis gave a lot more data about the substances, anyway. And while it certainly came at a higher cost to arrange this method, there was more than enough money in the business to make the extra step worth it. Not to mention that whatever he imported carried an insurance of quality, making his services more desirable. That was unless the greedier dealers decided to cut their dope with plaster or other crap. It wasn't Nate's problem anymore. He just needed the acclaim and money.

RYAN KING

Ryan was fairly certain Nathan still didn’t know who he was in relation to Enigma, which was just fine with him. Often times people hid their true natures if they knew he was the leader, showed themselves as perfect and well behaved just for him to see, but as soon as he turned around the attitude changed. If they didn’t know, chances were they’d show their true colors. So far Nathan’s colors were pleasant ones at the very least.

The non-descript van contained all the drugs Ryan had ordered. Neatly packed and organized. Stella would have fun putting that in the market. He took a small knife from his pocked and made a small incision in a random package from which he took a sample. He licked the sample from his knife, from that alone he could tell it was pure, good quality too. “I’ll pass on trying out the product myself, but I can see at least this one is legit.” As much as Ryan sold drugs and made money from the market, he had never tried anything stronger than pot, and that was only once a long time ago. His vices were more of the alcohol variety, and he’d like to not add more to it.

“I take you already got half of what’s due?” He asked while reaching inside his coat. From there he took a brown envelope that looked fat by its contents. “Here’s the rest. Count it up if you want, but it’s all there.” He just wanted get down with the recruiting business to be honest.

Morals and integrity have started meaning less and less to Nathan over the years. Turned out it was a lot more profitable being the one playing other people rather than getting played by them. However, it was his reputation the man always strived to promote or at the very least maintain. That, and nothing else, was what led him to accept the rarely upheld 'honor among thieves' code. A marketing strategy build on reliably supplying better product than most, if not all, of his competitors. All the extra work that entailed paid off if he got noticed by an organization such as Enigma.

"I do make a point of not scamming my clients," Charon commented glibly, confident that not a fault could be found with his wares. There was that one time he'd had a buyer tossed into the harbor, but the weasel had it coming for bartering with forged money. Otherwise he'd mostly managed to talk his way out of sticky situations, before potentially hiring someone else to deal with the problem.

Pretending to be too much of a gentleman to mention the rest of the payment himself, the smuggler wasn't disappointed when Ryan brought up his compensation. Accepting the envelope, Nate took a brief glance inside before stashing it into the inside pocket of his jacket. "I will take your word for it, friend." Stella had always kept up her end of the bargain, not to mention that he was rather curious as to Enigma's suggestion, a connection that could end up being more valuable than the contents of the envelope. If Ryan did want to rip him off, he'd just have to deal with that later.

"Shipping is included, if you have need for it. Either way, my men can assist you in transferring your new product." Since Nathan didn't know how the other man arrived or intended to transport the drugs, it seemed only polite to extend this offer. Frankly, he would have preferred to keep the goons around a while longer, but showed no signs of those concerns.

“That’s a very good trait to have, which is also part of the reason I’m here.” One of the most important things Ryan looked when searching for potential members was how reliable they were. Nathan so far hadn’t disappointed, even if he was a tad too formal, but Ryan coined that just as the guy’s weird mannerism.

The transaction was almost over, more on what Ryan was doing there later. Nathan didn’t bother to count the money and that was fine, no wasted time and also showed there was already a little trust between Nathan and Enigma. Maybe Ryan should put Stella in charge of potential members more often, she had a certain charisma apparently. He even got free shipping out of this deal. “Oh is it? Man you really go all out, don’t you? No wonder you were so well recommended. But I can take it from here, don’t worry. I’m sure your friends are paid by the hour.” There would be a an Enigma to greet them there and take care everything once they got to the temporary storage place, Ryan wasn’t worried by the extra work.

And then he turned to Nathan again, inviting him to join inside the van before doing so they could depart while his goons did whatever goons did. “So, are you ready to talk business now?”

"Nothing but a small concession to a regular customer," Nate courteously brushed off the appreciation. Money tended to be the ultimate motivator for most people, especially those involved in any illegal activities, but he wouldn't consider himself to be one of them. While it was important to be financially aware, securing loyalties and gaining useful connections was easily the best way to invest spare earnings. On the other hand, one couldn't overplay the generosity due to a number of additional factors. Such as being seen as weak or suspicious.

Instructing his crew to stay with the cargo until they reached Ryan's men to take it over, he followed the Enigma associate into the van, suggesting he may drive it to their destination himself. Nathan only scarcely managed to contain his curiosity when the other man at last broached the topic from earlier. "Please. You have my undivided attention, friend." Naturally, he did keep track of where they were heading, a part of his mind remaining vigilant to any potential foul play. As a young man, Nate had vowed never to let betrayal surprise him again, or at the very least be far better prepared for it. Though he couldn't fully trust Ryan despite Estrella's affirmation, he had earned the benefit of the doubt for now. It was all about being aware of and managing risks in his line of work.
