We're a crime/mafia roleplay set in the present-day Chicago.

After bombing the harbour, the new gang in town, Enigma, all but declared war on the most powerful family in the city, the Bianchi Family. NOTES: Tell me if I need to adjust things!
Heavy breaths escaped his lungs as Cole hastily parked the car partly on the curb, tires letting out a shrill screech as the car avoided a tree by mere inches. Pulling the keys out of the contact, he pushed the door open, letting out pained grunts as he tried to pull himself out of the vehicle, one hand clumsily clutching shut a nasty stab wound on his chest.

Tonight hadn't gone according to plan one bit, he had a terrible feeling about the job from the onset but like the idiot he was he'd went along with it anyways, not wanting to say 'no' to the money on offer, and in design it had been a routine job for him, just pick up a few guys and drive them to safety, and take a part of the cut as a reward.

He had paid for his stupidity, the people he had 'worked' for got other ideas and simply chose to beat the shit out of him in a secluded parking lot, torching the main getaway car to ensure he had no proof to pay them back with... One of the more psychotic of the bunch had proposed to cut him up and slit his throat to permanently silence him, but Cole had put up just enough of a fight for survival that they decided to simply cut their losses and avoid attention when the distant sound of sirens had started to become less and less distant.

They probably thought he'd get arrested and take the rap for the entire job, or bleed out, but one thing he always made sure was to stash his own ride close by for quick and easy getaways in a car nobody would care to look at twice.

He needed emergency help though, and he couldn't exactly walk into an emergency room without the cops asking questions about why a hooded man got himself stabbed in the same vicinity a nightly break-in had happened. He needed something off the books, someone that would hopefully help him out without asking too many questions. He had known one person, someone he'd not seen in nearly over a year, someone who probably had no reason to lend him a helping hand. It really was a foolish plan, but it was the best plan on a list of terrible ones.

Slowly Shuffling up the steps towards the door, he used his free hand to press the apartment buzzer, leaning close to it whilst putting most of his weight onto a small railing connected to the steps. "God I hope you're home right now..." he whispered at himself through breaths that became more and more strained by the second, warm blood from his body continuing to seep past his hands at a rate that would become fatal sooner, rather than later...

"I want to be like water. I want to slip through fingers, but hold up a ship."

ASTERIN SARGENT

I
t was one of the last nights she was going to spend in this place before moving in with her girl friend, Effie. Starting next week, there will be no more lonely, quiet nights. Sure, there's always the TV or radio on, playing in the background, but these things could drive someone mad with it's random chatter. Not that she didn't expect peace of mind with Effie, her friend's an intellectual after all, there is bound to be quiet time. But it's just the thought of another human being close to you. No more jumping up at strange noises, listening to any steps on the hallway, wondering if this is finally the night her ex boyfriend finds her and breaks her door.

Still. This little place had served her well, the first she got when she moved in Chicago three years ago. It was a one bedroom flat, with a small everything, from living room to kitchen, but it was comfortable enough for someone as minimalist as her, even if throughout those three years she had managed to gather some stuff that will soon require more space. It was more than it's physical constraints though, for her, it represented a fresh start, a shiny new beginning. As much as she was ready to move on and evolve, she was nostalgic to see it go, so she was spending every remaining night fully enjoying it, packing up accompanied with a bottle of wine after work.

Most of her things were already in boxes here and there, the little stuff. She was slowly taking her time, since she wanted to make a selection and throw away the useless crap. It proved to be a harder task than she thought. Contemplating some pairs of shoes and sipping her wine, she was startled by the door buzzer. Blinking a few times, she couldn't comprehend what was happening for a few seconds. Who was calling this late in the night? A feeling of dread took over her and after a minute she could finally overcome it and move. She slowly approached the door, trying to not make it obvious for the one on the other side that someone was moving behind it. It was kind of useless, she knew, if the person had been paying attention, they would have seen the lights on.

The buzzing kept going, annoying and deafening. Gulping, she looked through the peephole but could only see a tuft of hair. Whoever it was, it was not him. And she doubted he would just ring up at the door. Also for that matter, she doubted any thief or criminal would just do that if they planned to steal or murder her in her own apartment. Unless it was a trap of course. Maybe she should have brought that gun after all when she had the chance.

"Who is it?" she asked through the door, and when she didn't hear anything for the next ten seconds, she decided on instinct to open. Damn any possible trap, murderers didn't just ring bells. Whoever this man was, she was sure had a good reason. Maybe it was a neighbour, maybe he was bothered by her late night jam session? Though the music hadn't been that loud... Maybe her apartment was flooding his withouth her knowing? For a second, she tried to remember if she left the bath running.

Asterin looked at the young man expectantly. "Yes? How may I-" and abruptly stopped when she finally noticed the blood. It took a while, for how much it was. Thoughts of murder suddenly returned and she was stunned again. She wasn't used to this kind of image outside of the hospital, especially not right in front of her door.

NOTES: Tell me if I need to adjust things!
Hearing footsteps walk towards the door, part of him wondered if it was just delirium setting in or truly his prayers having been answered and the person being at home that night, and not keeping the door shut out of fear of the dangers that lurked outside during these hours.

Nodding off for a slight second, he sprung back to life as he could hear a voice speak to him directly, the thought of not dying making his body pump adrenaline into his system so he could grasp the opportunity to not walk to the white light everyone knew was the wrong side to walk towards. Even if there was a white light, Cole knew heaven wasn't waiting behind it for him.

Glancing at the figure, he nearly fell backwards off the railing at the attempt to right himself to something of a steady base. "It's me, Cole..." he softly spoke, weakly removing the hood from his head to give the woman an easier time to hopefully recognize him. "...I didn't know where else I could go." he exclaimed through soft heaves at trying to get oxygen into his system.

Cole barely even registered how the woman was reacting to his presence, but he knew that nobody was prepared for such things, not even the most hardened people could shrug off the sight of someone bleeding out on their doorstep. He just hoped that she didn't react in utter mortal fear and turtle up and call the cops on him.

And why would she have a reason to trust or help Cole. They had only met sparingly over the years, through her mother illness and Asterin Sargent being one of the doctors that they came across in the fight to keep his mother in the land of the living, a professional presence who did their job to the best of their abilities, but even experts weren't miracle workers and they had all known his mother had been done for the moment she had been diagnosed, the only thing they had been able to do was keep her fighting, and at the end keep her in as little pain as possible.

But part of him had felt more of a connection towards her than all the other doctors, he couldn't place it, but it was obvious that in a near-death situation he preferred to bleed out on her doorstep instead of other people's doorsteps...

Using his free hand to push himself off the railing, Cole immediately regretted his decision to stand as his body was in no state to keep his 165lbs frame upright, immediately reacting by letting his legs become noodles and let the rest of him crumple.

Using his least bloodied hand he grasped out for the woman, tracking blood everywhere in the process. "...Nobody can know about this..." Cole told in a way that was more serious and lucid than all the things he had though and said before, this had to stay off the books at all costs, for everyone's safety, but ultimately for selfish reasons.

ooking through the peephole didn't give her any real indication of who was on the other side of the door, the figure was hunched and either way, his face wouldn't have clicked right away. It still didn't once she had opened the dore, though there was something familiar about him. Still, the one thing that she was sure of was that something was very wrong. She had a bad feeling about the situation from the start but never in a thousand years Asterin would have expected an injured man on her threshold. His struggling voice tore at her heart. When he pushed himself off the railing, the movement kickstarted her brain and from then on she went on autopilot.

She hurried to catch him by an arm and keep him steady on his feet, trying to gauge out where exactly was the wound so she wouldn't do more damage when she manhandled him. With her foot she closed the door behind them and with her spare hand she turned back the lock. She didn't expect more visitors that night but it was a reflex by now.

Asterin lead the man to the couch, without much thinking. For a second she looked around the boxes with desperation, trying to remember in which one was the medical kit, before she flew to the bathroom, praying with hope that it was there. She never got to packing there and it was usual place for the kit. And sure enough, she found it in one of the cupboards. While it wasn't a kit to rival a whole hospital, it still contained more than your ordinary bandages and pain pills.

For a moment, she caught her reflection in the mirror and asked herself what the fuck she was doing. To her, this was still a strange men, the adrenalline rush wasn't making her memory click yet. But he said his name as though they knew each other. Either way, when she stepped back into the living room and saw him bleeding again, all questions flew out the window. Well, almost.

"What happened to you?" she asked as she approached, then carefully began to clear the fabric away to see the wound, cutting away at his shirt. She didn't mean it in an interrogative way, but medical. She needed to know if it was just a cut or a shot, so she would know how to proceed from then on. She looked up at him fearfully to see if he passed out.

NOTES: Tell me if I need to adjust things!
For a few minutes Cole had completely lost track of what was happening, the shock, pain, and blood loss probably causing his brain to completely clock out and preserve whatever he had for acute survival. But soon enough, the adrenaline kicked back in and he nearly jumped off the couch in a confused and fearful daze, taking seconds before he realized what he had done and where he had gone to.

In front of him sat Asterin, who had cut up his shirt and was probably well underway in making the wound less lethal, and helping him to survive. Pain he didn't feel, although he was unsure whether that was from the bloodloss and adrenaline, or whether she had given him something to dull the pain he had been feeling when he got shot in the first place.

Trying to recompose himself as much as was possible in this situation, he tilted his head towards the doctor, vaguely remembering her having asked Cole what has happened, unless his wandering mind was making him hallucinate slightly. "I, uh... Someone tried to rob me..." Cole lied through gritted teeth, hoping that Asterin was too pre-occupied in saving him to poke holes into his story.

Grunting in pain, he knew that she was probably looking for a bullet to dig out of his body. Whatever she did, it wasn't pleasant, although the entire situation was something that was unpleasant by design. "Bastard decided to shoot me when I decided to be an idiot." he continued to vaguely explain.

"I didn't know where else to go but here, I... I'm really sorry about ruining your carpet." Cole laughed weakly, the amount of blood he had lost causing his consciousness to dip up and down like a rollercoaster of death.

Trying to look around the room, his mind didn't register anything his eyes settled upon, everything was just nondescript figures to him, nothing was pertinent enough to stick in his mind when it was all focused on keeping his body from completely shutting down under the stress put onto it.

he stopped a few moments when he jumped up, as if woken up. This was not good at all. She was sure he fell unconscious for a few moments, due to bloodloss of course. That was a bummer. She could sew his wound, make him good as new, but he needed a blood transfusion. And that was not a thing she could improvise in her own home.

Listening and assesing the situation, before she dove in to fish the bullet out, she raised once more and went to the kitchen. She prepared a glass of water and squeezed a lemon in it, came back and ruffled through the meds. She picked something up for his immune system and offered it and the glass to him, helping him take a few gulps if necessary. Asterin chuckled while he drank, then prepared herself, putting on gloves and quickly disinfecting some tools. ”Don’t worry, the carpet’s the next owner’s problem. I’m moving soon” It was a joke of course, she wouldn’t leave something that troublesome as a bloody carpet to be found out. It would raise too many questions.

”The pill should help with any blood infection. Do you know if the bullet got out?” she asked, inspecting the wound again. She tried to look on his other side for exit wounds, but she didn’t want to move him more than necessary. But looking at his glazed look, she understood there was only so much to ask from him in that state. Carefully wiggling him around a bit more, she came to the conclusion the bullet must be still inside. She set to work, after putting some gauze around to help absorb the blood, as useless as it was. Her hands were light and using the appropriate tools, it didn’t take her long to locate the bullet. All the panic and confusion from the first moment she laid eyes on him disappeared, gave way to a fierce focus.

The fact that he already lost so much blood and continued to do so was still not good. He needed to be in a hospital and she had a mind to call an ambulance as soon as she stitched him up. But his earlier words rang in her ears. Why did no one have to know about this? ”You need an ambulance. No, don’t move, I almost got it” she adviced as she finally pulled the bullet, predicting that the thought of going to the hospital would trouble the man. The fresh wound flowed another stream of blood and she was close to cursing. She chanced another look at his face – pale and distressed. Not good, she had to hurry. Was he unconscious again? She hurried to prepare the sewing kit, trying to focus, when another thought occured. ”Do you know your blood type?” God, please, let him be conscious enough to answer that. She had a mind to donate a little of her own if necessary. But she couldn't risk if they were not compatible. The man was starting to become more familiar to her, especially his voice. Maybe she just imagined but with his eyes closed, she could almost see him sleeping somewhere in the hospital, maybe besides someone's bed. He said his name was Cole and she felt ashamed that she couldn't place him immediately, even if she was busy stitching him up. Still, if he had been a patient of hers, maybe there were records of him, she could ring the hospital and find his blood type. His last name would've been great, she couldn't really look in his wallet for ID, not if he had been robbed... right?

Hearing the urgency in the doctor's voice, Cole's eyes widened and seemingly grasped the situation once more, making sure to stare straight at the woman's eyes, probably even trying to get into her soul. "No, please. No ambulance, It's not that bad." Cole claimed, immediately trying to right himself on the ruined couch but the pain suddenly and brutally shooting through his body, making him feel more alive than he had ever felt.

But Cole wasn't a fool and he knew he was mostly just lying to himself at this point, the sweat pouring from every pore as his body did its best to keep it from giving the ghost. Despite being near death, Cole felt oddly focused, albeit only at what the doctor was trying to do to keep him alive.

"Blood type..." Cole mumbled, his mind racing at the speed of a bullet needing the info that could save his life. "A-plus I think, no... yeah, that's it." as he recalled the few times he had actually donated blood, especially early on in his mother's sickness when he had thought it would somehow make a difference.

Looking around, he spotted the black of his jacket and he could just about grasp it from the position he was in. Rummaging around, he pulled out his wallet and weakly offered it to Asterin. "The... The card is in there, if you need proof."

Peeking up at the woman's distressed face, he blinked a few times and let out a strained sigh. "Take whatever you need, I might not even need it ever again, soon." He chuckled grimly, trying to make light of a situation that was no laughing matter.

he tightened her lips in thought when, as predicted, he refused an ambulance. This was an unprecedented situation for her and she was currently busy stitching him up to think too much about his reasons. Some people feared and despised hospitals just for what they were, maybe he was one of those people. It didn't matter right then, he just had to get better in whatever way was possible.

"It's ok, you shouldn't move too much" she advised when he looked for something in his jacket. She stopped her movements to let him do what he wanted. So he still got his wallet. At least he didn't get shot and lost his things. But has it been worth it? The bullet could have had a more unfortunate target, like an organ. Did he have something really precious on him that he didn't want to give up? Though how Cole managed to fend for himself while being injured was truly admiring. Maybe it was a rookie thief that shot him by accident and then ran away scared. Maybe she didn't want to think too much at the moment about the situation, but while she worked, this was just the way her brain tried to calm itself, think of reasonable scenarios.

"I guess that robber didn't know with what badass he was dealing with" she offered with a warm smile, thinking about the expression 'you should see the other guy'. Finally, she was finished stitching him up. "All done. You've endured this with such stoicism, I don't want to hear any more of this pessimist talk, alright?" and offered a kind smile.

After she cleaned and patched him up, she took off the single-use gloves and looked through the wallet. "Cole Taylor" she whispered, looking at his picture and trying to recall not-so-distant memories. It was a fairly common surname, but maybe something more recent? "Cole and Jennifer Taylor, right?" When there was a pause, she quickly looked back, remembering the state he was in. Or maybe he just didn't hear her whispering,. Still, she had to check if he was still conscious. "How do you feel? On a scale from 1 to 10, how dizzy are you?" she asked, rummaging through the emergency kit to find a flashlight to check his pupils.

Chuckling a little at what Asterin was saying to him, he shook his head in between pained groans when she shoved the needle straight through his skin in her attempt to patch him up to working condition. "Yeah, I'm a real badass and a half." he'd sure as hell trade in that cred for not having been stabbed tonight, anything was better than feeling like he was going to die.

Shifting to a pseudo sitting position after the doctor finished up her artwork, he looked at her going through his wallet and trying to piece his identity together, since he hadn't really thrown her any bone to chew on regarding who he was, seeing he was barely from death's doorway right now, he also didn't feel like elaborating about who he was.

"Yeah, Jennifer's my mother... Well, was my mother, she passed on a while ago." he spoke taking whatever lemon'd water was left in the glass and putting on his best effort to stay awake, but the worst seemed to have been behind him somewhat, or at least his body had started to get used to the stress it was under. "The dizziness is alright, but the pain's a straight up twenty-two on a scale of ten."

Sighing lightly, he dropped his head into the couch pillow and took a few deep breaths. He felt bad that he threw himself onto the doorstep of this woman who barely knew him, but he knew it was better this way, at least for him. "Also, I'll try to call first next time, but I kinda didn't have your number on me."

”I
remember her” she whispered with kindness and sadness, but tried not to show the last one too much. She knew some people despised that kind of stuff. ’And you, now’ she thought, though in her memory he was younger.

”Hmm” she mused, eyebrows rising a little surprised. Dizziness alright but pain high. At least it meant he was gonna survive. It meant the blood loss hadn’t been that critical and he would recover on his own. In time of course. A transfusion would speed things up for sure but she didn’t want to take unnecessary risks. Maybe she’ll try again the hospital option tomorrow morning. For now she just went back to the kitchen and quickly returned with some lemon water.

”If you say the dizziness is bearable, I won’t poke more holes into you then. Lucky for you, too, since I had some wine earlier and it really wouldn’t help” she finished the last part with a laugh. She fished a couple of painkillers and sleeping pills from the medical kit and helped him take them. ”I usually don’t have very strong stuff at home, but fortunately I have some left from the time I sprained my ankle. This should also help you sleep, which I recommend plenty, but you also have to replenish the liquids in your body. I’ll leave this bottle of water right here, alright? So whenever you wake up, make sure to drink as much as you can”

She couldn’t help but watch him with worry. She reached for a blanket to put over him and helped him with the pillows. She would’ve liked to move him to bed but it would’ve been a difficult task.

Whatever Asterin had given Cole, it had hit the spot just right. The painkillers in combination with his body being completely exhausted from the struggle meant he was quickly out like a light, and had the heaviest sleep he had in years. Of course, it only meant waking up was the heaviest he had too.

Waking up, Cole's mind barely even registered where he was or what was going on. The only thing he realized was that he wasn't in bed at home, and he also wasn't crashing on a couch in the Enigma warehouse. Trying to get up, pain immediately shot through his body reminding him of what had happened, he got shot and he barely even survived death itself.

Softly letting out a 'shit' from under his breath, he found a way to remove himself from the lying position, but in all honesty he felt like complete and utter death. Grabbing the bottle next to him, he was quick to down the entire contents of it into his gullet, it certainly hit the spot but didn't exactly help kill the pain.

Looking at the blinds, he could see the light beating down onto it from the outside. So it probably meant he had slept longer than he had expected, although softly he could hear the sprinkling of a shower elsewhere in the house, meaning that Asterin was still around and hadn't run off to go to the cops, or something else like that.

Stumbling around, he found a medical kit and rummaged around in it until he found the heaviest painkillers he could personally identify, taking those to the sink he tossed them down and drowned them through.

"Why the hell did I accept that fucking job." he wondered loudly, holding himself up against the kitchen counter.

He had been persona non grata for years after the entire shitshow that caused him to join Enigma in the first place. Why did he even think that people had forgotten that fact three years later. Undoubtedly the guys had used him for just that reason, get a quick score out of it and then do Chicago a favour by getting rid of a two-timing car thief in the process.

But honestly, he hadn't been in a position to say no either. He had needed the money, bills had to be paid, impoverished living standards had to be met. And ultimately, it meant taking stupid risks that put him right in the firing line for every Chicago scumlord trying to mess with him. Worst of all, now he was one bullet wound richer and zero dollars wealthier. It probably even meant he couldn't work at Neo for a while, until he had nursed himself back to health. Meaning he was set to have less money than before...

Noticing the shower had stopped, Cole immediately hoped Asterin hadn't heard him speak earlier. It would only complicate matters further, but it wasn't as if life couldn't use more headaches, right?
